What is super-resolution microscopy?
Super-resolution microscopy refers to a set of advanced imaging techniques that overcome the diffraction limit of light traditionally observed in optical microscopy, enabling the visualization of structures at a 10 times better resolution than it was previously achievable. The diffraction limit imposed by the properties of light hindered the ability to distinguish closely spaced points, making structures smaller than 200 nm appear blurred.
Super-resolution microscopy overcomes this limitation through various innovative methods, such as single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM), stimulated emission depletion (STED), and structured illumination microscopy (SIM). These techniques, recognized with the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, utilize new dyes, light manipulation, and computational tools to enhance resolution. The significance lies in the ability to observe and analyze cellular and molecular structures at a finer scale, providing crucial insights into biological processes and facilitating advancements in fields like medicine and molecular biology.
